Professional Journey

From volunteer to recognized authority in accessible coastal tourism

Síle's journey into nature-based tourism began while volunteering at the Irish Wildlife Trust during her university years at UCD. She was passionate about making natural spaces accessible to people of all abilities — that hasn't changed. After completing her Environmental Science degree in 2010, she didn't head straight to a desk job. Instead, she joined Fingal County Council's Parks and Recreation department, where she spent seven years pioneering the first formal accessibility audits of coastal pathways along Dublin Bay.

Her breakthrough moment came in 2017. That's when she designed the comprehensive walking guide for Bull Island's wooden bridge path — the guide that's now become the standard reference for accessible tidal island exploration. But here's what really matters: she didn't create it alone in an office. She spent months walking those routes with older adults, listening to what actually made a difference, what worried people, what delighted them.

What drives Síle is witnessing older adults rediscover outdoor confidence. She's seen people who haven't walked anywhere meaningful in years find their way back to nature. That connection — between person and place — is what her work is really about. Her approach combines rigorous ecological knowledge with genuine empathy for the physical needs and preferences of mature walkers. Every route she develops balances natural beauty with practical accessibility. No shortcuts. Just real, thoughtful design.

Síle believes that proper trail interpretation and careful route design remove the barriers that often prevent retirees from engaging with their local environment. It's not complicated — it's about respecting people's time, their bodies, and their right to experience nature on their own terms.

Areas of Expertise

Deep knowledge across coastal access, senior-friendly tourism, and Dublin's natural reserves

Tidal Ecology

Deep understanding of tidal patterns, mudflats, and how water shapes walking routes. She knows Bull Island's rhythms like most people know their own neighborhood.

Accessible Trail Design

Designing routes that work for different mobility levels. Not just wheelchair access — thinking about grip, rest points, surface texture, and sight lines.

Nature Interpretation

Making wildlife, geology, and ecological concepts engaging without being academic. She explains what you're seeing in ways that stick with you.

Gerontology-Informed Education

Understanding how older adults learn, move, and engage with outdoor spaces. This shapes everything from pace to information delivery to comfort planning.

Sustainable Tourism

Growing visitor access without damaging fragile ecosystems. She's developed protocols that work for both nature and people — they're not mutually exclusive.

How She Works

A methodology built on observation, respect, and real-world testing

Síle doesn't design routes from a map. She walks them. Multiple times. In different seasons, different weather, different times of day. She notices where people actually walk versus where they're "supposed" to walk. She observes how light hits the path at 3pm in winter, whether muddy patches dry out by afternoon, where wind gets channeled between dunes.

Then she brings people with her. Not just one age group or mobility level — she tests with mixed groups because that's real life. She watches where people naturally pause. Where they ask questions. Where they lose confidence. That feedback shapes everything: handrail placement, step height, information signage, rest spot location.

What makes her approach distinctive is that she doesn't treat accessibility as an afterthought. It's the starting point. She asks: "How can I create a route that works for someone with arthritis, someone recovering from a hip replacement, someone who's anxious about falling, and someone who just wants a nice walk?" The answer is rarely the same twice.

The best trail isn't the one that gets to the view fastest. It's the one that gets people outside, keeps them safe, and makes them want to come back. That's the whole thing.

She's also practical. She knows that older adults have limited time, limited energy, and real concerns about weather, facilities, and safety. Her guides aren't glossy marketing materials. They're honest: "This section can be muddy after rain," "There's no shelter for the last 15 minutes," "The parking is tight but there's overflow two minutes away." That transparency builds trust.

Working with Fingal County Council and now through priest-brew Ltd, she's shifted from individual route design to developing frameworks that other organizations can use. Her methodology has been adopted by tourism boards across the Dublin region. But she still walks the routes herself. That hands-on connection is non-negotiable for her.
